FAQ

What should I know before I join?

If you’re interested in the details of club membership, please read through the rest of the FAQ section.

Information about our finances, insurance, and maintenance can be discussed at any of our monthly meetings. Meetings are held at the Schaumburg Airport on the second Thursday of most months (we typically cancel one or two per year) at 7:30. We encourage prospective members to attend our monthly meetings, but we request that you please contact us before attending.

Are there any minimum time requirements?

New members must have at least a Private Pilot Certificate. Although we have no hard requirement for minimum hours, prospective members are vetted by the board and membership as a whole. We will have you fly with a club approved instructor to demonstrate proficiency. You don’t need to have a high-performance endorsement before joining, but you’ll need one before flying the Cessna 182 solo.

What does it cost?

Schaumburg Flying Club takes pride in its financial position and has gone through great lengths to keep costs fair to all members, and divide the way we pay toward fixed and variable expenses.

  • Equity Investment – Each member purchases a $5,000 equity share when they join. The investment is returned to a departing member upon his or her replacement
  • Monthly Dues – Each member is reponsible for monthly dues at $192 per month.
  • Aircraft Use – We charge wet hobbs rates for our aircraft. These are currently $135/hr for our C182S and $115/hr for our C172S. There are times where we add surcharges due to unusual circumstances, but we take pride in involving the full membership in these kinds of decisions

We report member statements using the ScheduleMaster sytem, the same that we do for booking, and our treasurer allows for many different methods to submit payment.

How do I join?

Schaumburg Flying Club is currently at full membership with a waiting list to join. If you are interested in being added to our wiating list, please indicate your request by filling in the Contact Us form.

When are the meetings?

Meetings are held at the Schaumburg Airport on the second Thursday of most months at 7:30 PM. We will typically cancel meetings for December, one of the summer months, and if we anticipate low attendance.

Depending on weather, we will either meet at our hangars or in the meeting room in the basement, but you can usually find some of us in the restaurant upstairs before and/or after our meetings.

Please Contact Us before coming to a meeting to let us know you’re coming and we can confirm that we are holding the meeting as scheduled.

Do I need renter’s insurance?

Members are “named insured” – you’re fully covered when flying club aircraft. Our insurance policy is funded by our monthly dues.

I’m a CFI. Can I instruct in club aircraft?

The club is not for profit and is not in the business of providing instruction. Since our members can hire any CFI they want for their own instruction, members could hire CFI’s who happen to be members. Members who are CFI’s can not, however, teach non-members in the club aircraft.

Once I become a member, how do I get keys and start scheduling the airplanes?

Upon your membership being accepted and receipt of your equity investment, our board members will work with you on getting you keys and access to ScheduleMaster, our online scheduling system.

You will also need to do a checkout flight with a club-approved CFI before you will have scheduling permissions. We will work this all out with you upon joining.

What is the check-out process to start flying?

Depending on your experience, you will be required to have either 5 or 10 hours in-type prior to solo. This time can be accumulated with an instructor in our aircraft after joining the club. You can also use our aircraft to obtain a high-performance endorsement if you do not yet have one. The club has instructors who you can work with to meet time requirements, endorsements, and checkouts once you’ve joined the club.

We require check-out flights in each aircraft type or before night flight before you fly any relevant missions.

Are there currency requirements to rent club aircraft?

You must fly either of our aircraft every 90 days to remain current. To fly at night, you must have flown either aircraft at night within the last 90 days.

Can I fly club aircraft under BasicMed or with a Drivers License under MOSAIC rules?

The club does recognize BasicMed and several members actively fly under BasicMed rules.

Although the FAA states that our aircraft qualify under MOSAIC rules to be flown under Sport Pilot privileges, the club has voted to NOT permit their operation under those rules. Members must hold a current FAA Medical or have BasicMed requirements met (and have the proper paperwork on file with our secretary) in order to fly our aircraft.

How do club members stay in touch between meetings?

There are times when communications need to be made between our regular club meetings. The club does maintain a Slack instance for ongoing communication (both on-topic and off-topic general aviation discussions) which can be accessed on your computer or phone.

Additionally, anything urgent is generally sent to the membership via email.
